Meet Francesca Spaghetti and her twin sister Poppy Noodle. Two ordinary girls leading ordinary lives until a wise, old lady showed them the way in to The Magic Meadow - an enchanted world where anything, it seems, is possible. As if that’s not enough, they discover that they have been somehow granted quite-extraordinary Magic Powers when a drawing they make unexpectedly ‘comes to life’ and a desperate pirate girl called Patty pleads with them to help rescue her father who’s been kidnapped by the fearsome Big Beard, the most wicked pirate ever to roam the seven seas.
What can they do? What should they do? They hesitate, afraid. Finally, they decide that it is their duty to use their Magic abilities to help others in difficulty. This courageous choice leads them not only to the warm, palm-fringed shores of a distant tropical island but also into exciting and perilous situations which require all their courage and ingenuity. When an opportunity arises to make good their escape from the pirate’s lair in a tiny sailing boat, they and their new friends find themselves helplessly looking up at Big Beard’s hulking ship, the Naughty Starfish, bristling from stem to stern with gigantic cannons that are all pointed at them…
Unless they can come up with a brilliant idea it looks like they won’t be going home any time soon. Suddenly, from the big ship’s quarterdeck the command is given to open fire…
If you like fast-paced, thrilling and wholesome adventure stories featuring well-rounded, fun and believable characters, then Big Beard the Pirate is the book for you. Beautifully written, light hearted and told with clever, good humor, this is a story that you and your family will want to read time and time again.

“Francesca and Poppy are full of energy, inventive, and find a magical world that takes them on board a wild adventure. (It’s an) enjoyable tale. Big Beard and his crew provide hilarity as they try to beat the sisters on their quest, with a lot of information about pirates conveyed. The end was a little bit of a surprise, and I'm already looking forward to rereading this tale.”

Excerpt
At school they have been learning about pirates and how they hide their treasure so Poppy Noodle quickly sketched a pirate girl. She drew her standing on a tropical island with a treasure chest. She gave her a real pirate hat with a skull and crossbones on it, a stripy shirt (like all pirates have) big black boots, a leather belt with a brass buckle, and, of course, a razor-sharp cutlass. She then painted some coconut trees and a turquoise sea in the background. To finish off she added a pirate ship, some dolphins, oh, and a seagull.
“There. Done,” she said. Francesca Spaghetti stopped her song and came over to have a look.
“That’s very nice,” she said. “Where’s the parrot?”
Poppy Noodle folded her arms and looked at her sister. “She doesn’t have a parrot.”
“All proper pirates have parrots,” said Francesca Spaghetti. “Everyone knows that.”
“She is a PROPER pirate” Poppy Noodle insisted, but SHE doesn’t need to have a silly parrot. The picture is perfect the way it is.” Poppy Noodle stuck out her tongue.
Francesca Spaghetti was about to respond in the same way when, at that moment, the page started to shimmer in a strange way. It became almost see-through and a bluish, purply light flickered over the page. There was a snap, then a crack, then a sizzling sound and a strange smell like roses. The two sisters could hardly believe their eyes as the pirate girl in the picture slowly got up from the page and stood up facing them. She was only tiny - she could fit in their dolls house - if she wanted to - and she spoke in a voice that was very faint.
“Help me! Help me!” she pleaded. “My name is Patti. I live on Coconut Island in the middle of a tropical sea. A mean ole pirate called Big Beard has kidnapped my father and is taking him to the prison in his fort. He wants my father to show him where our treasure is buried. Please help me to get him free and keep our treasure safe.”
Francesca Spaghetti and Poppy Noodle looked at each other with their mouths open. Before they could say anything, the image slowly faded until nothing was left but the picture on the page, only, now, the image of the pirate girl was GONE. Only the island, the sea and the seagull remained.
“What just happened?” said Poppy Noodle. “Where did my pirate girl go?”
